“We are out of herbs again,” Tara said. “You went last time. It’s my turn to go.”

“I don’t know. You heard what Athena said. You were in a lot of danger. If you go up on the mountain and get trapped by some hunters, you could be in trouble,” Morgan said.

“I’m a witch. I’m sure I could handle it,” Tara said. “Plus, Kali would be with me.”

“I know that you can protect yourself pretty easily, for the most part, but the hunters around here hang out in pairs, if not groups. It’s harder to protect yourself from a group of people even if you are a witch,” Morgan said.

“You’re just being overprotective,” Tara said.

“That’s what big sisters do. I tell you what, I’ll play rock, paper, scissors for it,” Morgan said. “Best two out of three.”

Tara won the first round but Morgan won the last two.

“You cheated,” Tara said, pretending to pout.

“How can I cheat? You have free will to choose paper every time.”

“I guess I do, don’t I? Tara said. “You know, it’s spring. We have a nice big, back yard. We need to plant the herbs that we use, besides having the few herbs that are growing in various windows inside the house.”

“Good idea. I’ll grab some roots while I’m out there. I’ll get enough to start a couple plants of each one we need.”

“Sounds good,” Tara said. “When you get back, if you’ll allow me to, Kali and I will go to the store and get some gardening soil and plant them.”

Morgan took in a deep breath, and as though she was greatly put out by the idea, she said, “I suppose that I could allow it, maybe.”

“I know you’re worried about me because of what Athena said. But you can’t keep me locked up in a gilded cage to protect me. We will just have to be aware of what is going on around us, without freaking out over everything, and deal with whatever comes when it comes.”

Morgan dropped her head and sighed. “I know. I just couldn’t deal with it if anything happened to you.”

“I know, and I feel the same way. But you aren’t my babysitter. I’m a grown up. What would you have done if I had decided to stay in Fort Smith instead of go with you?”

“I knew you wouldn’t,” Morgan said.

“But what if I had,” Tara argued.

“I wouldn’t have stayed gone. I probably would have driven around for a day and gone back.”

Tara shook her head. “What’s going to happen if things get serious between you and Josh and you get married? I can’t live with you guys.”

“By that time we will have figured out what is endangering you and buried it.”

“This is a dangerous world we live in. There is always something.”

“You’re just trying to stress me out,” Morgan said. “Stop it.”

Tara laughed as Morgan grabbed her satchel and headed out the door.

“It is beautiful up here. Maybe you should have closed the store and all of us come up here,” Maya said.
